Borders Sculpture Park at Mellerstain House

Make a note of these horticultural and design days out

The second season of Borders Sculpture Park at Mellerstain House near Kelso, Scotland, has opened with The Messenger, a series of newly commissioned artworks by British artist Hilary Jack. The Messenger comprises four site-specific works, made in response to the classical setting of Mellerstain – with its house, designed by William and Robert Adam, and gardens by Sir Reginald Blomfield. It is curated by Sarah Coulson of Yorkshire Sculpture Park and each of Jack’s four artworks focuses on a different aspect of Mellerstain’s compelling narrative. The park is open from Friday to Monday until 1 October. www.mellerstain.com

One of the world’s most influential gardeners of the 20th and 21st centuries, Beth Chatto, sadly passed away in May aged 94. To honour her life, the Beth Chatto Symposium will bring together celebrated gardeners, designers and plantspeople for a series of talks at the University of Essex. The speakers, who include Dan Pearson MSGD, Professor James Hitchmough and head gardener at Beth Chatto Gardens, Åsa Gregers-Warg, will explore ecological gardening in both design and practice. The Symposium takes place from 30-31 August and proceeds will go to the Beth Chatto Education Trust. www.bethchattosymposium.com
