Topsoil contamination risk

Unsafe soils are being used in gardens

Lack of awareness of wider legislation governing topsoil could potentially mean that unsafe soils are being used in gardens and other sensitive sites, such as schools, warns leading soil supplier, Tarmac Topscape.

Although the British Standard for Topsoil, BS 3882:2015, ensures soils are tested for texture, pH and NPK values, there are no set criteria for contamination testing, as it is dependent on the proposed end-use of the soil at the recipient site.

Sarah Bland, technical sales manager at Topscape, urges contractors and designers to seek out reputable topsoil suppliers that ensure their products are fully BS-certified and free from a comprehensive list of industry-recognised potential contaminants.

Harmful contaminants can be a particular problem in recycled soils, she says, as their provenance is not always known.
